COVID Cases are Up While Deaths are Way, Way Down

Why is it that we frequently hear about cases, but rarely about deaths?
Are the media trying to panic us, or are they truly so inept as to be uninformed about the most important factor regarding the COVID-19 threat, namely the threat to our very lives?

The CDC website contains a list of the US death count by week. The figures are in plain view. The only thing lacking is a graph to drive the trend line home, so we typed them into a spreadsheet and created our own graph. The CDC statistics are based on "death certificate data received and coded by the National Center for Health Statistics as of July 13, 2020."
The graph above reveals the trend from the weekly figures shown to the left, and the trend is unmistakable: the weekly death count is dropping at a very, very sharp rate. The number of deaths last week (July 11, 2020) were the lowest they've been since the week ending March 21. Deaths reported for July 11 were 137 nationwide, an average of less than 3 per state, which is 99.2% lower than the 16,895 deaths reported the week of April 18th.
